DELIVEROO OF DESIRE: Corrupt Prison Watchdog Jailed for Sex Texts and Drug Smuggling

The Guardian Original source ↗
Helen Spree, 63, the self-styled ‘prisoners’ Deliveroo,’ has been locked up for five years and three months. The head of HMP Liverpool’s independent monitoring board was caught red-handed sending explicit messages to a killer inmate and smuggling in drugs. Dylan Westall, 35, serving life for manslaughter, was one of her favorite recipients. Police found two custom pillows with his face and a gun embossed on them at Spree's home. She also had a tattoo: a bumblebee holding a love heart, captioned ‘Masterpiece.’ Spree’s illicit activities spanned 20 months, during which she sent explicit messages to multiple inmates, disclosed security details, and smuggled in cannabis, phones, SIM cards, and chargers. She even transferred £100 to Westall. Judge Flewitt KC noted that while Spree saw her role as a chance for good, she was ‘manipulated’ by prisoners who used her vulnerabilities. Her defense barrister revealed a history of abuse and trauma, which left her susceptible to flattery and manipulation. Westall received an additional 12 months on top of his life sentence.
