BUSTED: ยฃ34m Cocaine Smuggling Operation Crashes in Eastbourne
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has shattered a major cocaine smuggling ring, nabbing five suspects and seizing 425kg of the Class A drug. The haul, worth an estimated ยฃ34m, was intercepted at Eastbourne Marina on Monday afternoon.
Today, the five men appeared before Brighton & Hove Magistratesโ Court, charged with conspiring to fraudulently evade a prohibition on the importation of cocaine. They will next face Lewes Crown Court on 8 July.
The suspects, aged 31 to 49, are:
- Alan John Colquhoun, 49, from Alloa, Clackmannanshire
- William Donohoe, 38, from Airdrie
- Ian Smith, 49, and Jacob Cronin, 31, both from Eastbourne
- Daniel Ruffell, 35, from Slough
NCA officers swooped on the New Horizon fishing vessel as it docked at Eastbourne Marina, having collected the drugs in the English Channel. Four of the suspects were on board the boat, while the fifth was arrested upon their return.
Carl Barrass, NCA senior investigating officer, quipped: 'This bust represents a major blow to the organised crime group behind the importation. The loss of ยฃ34m worth of cocaine will definitely cramp their style.'
The operation involved a multi-agency effort, with support from the Joint Maritime Security Centre, Sussex Police, and Police Scotland. Searches have been conducted across multiple locations.
Looks like this crewโs next big score is a date in court.
