π INTERNATIONAL CAR CAPERS: Details of Toyota Theft Ring's Methods Revealed
The plot thickens, mate. A Brazilian bloke, Rodrigo Kanae Sato, 45, is at the center of an international car theft syndicate that allegedly stole five four-wheel drives a day in Queensland. The judge heard that the case against him is mostly circumstantial, but no less serious.
Sato and his crew flew into Brisbane last October to break into specific Toyota models like LandCruisers and Prados. They pulled off a 12-day spree, nabbing 60 vehicles before shipping them off to the United Arab Emirates in containers π’. Police managed to recover about a quarter of the stolen rides.
Sato was cornered when two alleged stolen LandCruisers were spotted entering a wrecking yard. The syndicateβs method? They drilled small holes into the vehicles, accessed the control system with a third-party device, and drove off without a key π₯. Pretty slick, but not slick enough.
Sato applied for bail after seven months in the clink. His defence barrister argued that the case is circumstantial, and Sato would wear an electronic tracking device to stay put. The Crown opposed, citing his lack of ties to Australia and family back in Brazil. Justice Crowley granted bail but ordered Sato to find a suitable place to live first.
